Dermal Filler Pre-Care & Aftercare Instructions
How to Prepare for Your Filler Appointment and Care for the Treated Area Afterwards
Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore volume, enhance facial features, and soften the appearance of certain lines and folds. At Eureka Body Care & Spa, your provider will discuss your goals, the product used, and expected results before treatment. The guidance below helps you prepare and recover comfortably.
Before Your Dermal Filler Appointment
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment, as it can increase the chance of bruising.
- Tell your provider about all medications and supplements you take — some can increase bruising. Do not stop prescribed medication unless your own doctor advises it.
- Tell your provider about any allergies, previous filler treatments, dental work planned, or a history of cold sores.
- Plan your appointment with events in mind: swelling or bruising can last several days.
- Arrive with a clean face, free of makeup.
After Your Dermal Filler Treatment
- Mild swelling, tenderness, redness, and bruising at the injection sites are normal and usually settle within a few days to a week.
- A cool compress can be applied gently during the first day to help with swelling.
- Do not massage, press, or manipulate the treated area unless your provider instructs you to.
- Avoid makeup on the injection sites for the rest of the treatment day.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours.
- Try to sleep on your back the first night, and avoid sleeping with pressure on the treated area.
- Wait about two weeks before facials, massages, or other treatments on the treated area, unless your provider advises otherwise.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will I see my filler results?
Results are visible right away, though swelling can temporarily affect the look. The settled result is best judged after about two weeks.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Longevity varies by product, area, and individual — commonly from 6 to 18 months. Your provider can explain what to expect for the product used.
Is it normal to feel lumps after filler?
Small areas of firmness can occur while the filler settles and usually soften within two weeks. Contact your provider if a lump is painful, growing, or still present after two weeks.
Can I fly after dermal fillers?
We generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before flying, mainly so any swelling settles and you are near your provider if questions come up.
Can filler be removed if I don’t like it?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can often be dissolved with an enzyme treatment. Ask your provider which type of filler you received and what options exist.
When to Contact a Medical Professional
Contact your provider the same day if you notice increasing or severe pain, skin that looks pale, white, blotchy, or dusky near the treated area, or a sore that is not healing — these can be signs of a blocked blood vessel and need prompt attention. Seek emergency care immediately for any change in vision.
